The IamResponding (IaR) platform plays a critical role in streamlining emergency communications, enabling faster response times through real-time incident alerts, responder tracking, and integrated mapping tools. Known for its reliability and ease of use, IaR empowers departments of all sizes, from rural volunteer fire stations to major urban response teams, by enhancing coordination, improving situational awareness, and reducing response delays through intelligent, connected solutions.
Cleaning up CAD with AI
Early on, Definity First’s efforts were focused on tackling incident data from third-party Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems. Since IaR doesn’t control these systems, incident messages arrive in plain text, with crucial information like addresses or coordinates appearing in unpredictable formats. The lack of structured data impedes automation – making it harder to parse automatically, more likely to produce errors, and incompatible with many emergency management tools that rely on structured input to trigger workflows or alerts.
Before AI, agencies used custom parsing rules to extract this data for mapping. Building on this, Definity First introduced natural-language processing (NLP) models trained on thousands of incidents and AI to improve this process. The new AI-based system with NLP techniques understands and processes plain text, predicting and extracting specific data from CAD incidents, and generates structured formats for the information. This enables the system to identify addresses, cross streets, and statuses of responding units regardless of how the messages come in. In addition to just extracting the data, AI is also used for real-time classification and summarization of incident messages.
These improvements help responders quickly interpret complex alerts and improve the accuracy and speed of the information coming in from CAD systems. Ultimately, with this technology, first responders are better equipped to coordinate response efforts and make life-saving decisions quickly.
Livestreaming Real-Time Audio
A major enhancement in the IaR portal has been the integration of live audio streaming across mobile (iOS/Android) and web platforms. Responders can now connect to and manage multiple radio channels simultaneously, with the ability to mute/unmute lines as needed and access archived audio for playback and review. As emergency dispatchers transmit their instructions, IaR provides an interface for first responders to listen to the corresponding frequency. Basically, this feature transforms any cell phone into a radio receiver - designed to be intuitive and reliable, even in high-stress situations. The livestreaming feature not only supports better on-scene coordination but also allows for post-incident analysis and training.
What’s Next
The collaboration between IamResponding and Definity First has laid a strong foundation for intelligent, real-time emergency response, but it’s just the beginning. With core AI-powered features now streamlining how incident data is processed and visualized, the focus is shifting toward expanding the platform’s capabilities even further.
Future efforts will aim to deepen the use of AI and automation, including enhancements to predictive incident analysis, improved cross-agency coordination tools, and create even smarter alert systems. There's also a strong focus on continuously improving the mapping experience, optimizing voice and data integration, and supporting new types of CAD inputs as the emergency tech landscape evolves.
By scaling these innovations across its network of over 17,000 agencies and 700,000 responders, IamResponding is positioned to set a new standard in public safety technology. Definity First remains a key strategic partner, driving the next wave of enhancements to support faster, smarter, and more connected emergency response operations.
